Musical performances, arts, crafts and bilingual feeding shows
The Monterey Bay Aquarium will celebrate children and their families during the 9th annual Día del Niño festivities on Sunday, April 25. The day will be filled with special presentations, activities and performances throughout the aquarium. Children age 12 and under will be admitted free all day.
The annual cultural event includes face painting, a special art exhibition by local students and performances by El Teatro Campesino, with their “Watt a Waste” musical play – families will be both entertained and delighted with fun activities and lively performances. Visitors can also enjoy bilingual feeding shows, including the penguin feeding at 3 p.m., a sea otter feeding and training session at 3:30 p.m., and a kelp forest feeding show at 4 p.m.
Mariachi Azteca will perform traditional Mexican melodies out on the Great Tide Pool Deck with 10-year old Gabriela Sepulveda, as featured in the national show, “Sábado Gigante” (“Giant Saturday”).
Visitors to Día del Niño will be among the first to experience the aquarium’s newest special exhibition, “Hot Pink Flamingos: Stories of Hope in a Changing Sea.” Colorful wading birds, playful penguins, coral reefs and penguins help you explore a world with a changing ocean. Children and families can learn the value of a zero-waste lunch with hands-on craft experiences in the Discovery Labs from 11:30 - 3:30 p.m., where there will also be a special presentation of “Chief of the Reef” at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Día del Niño offers great ways for children and families to gain a deeper appreciation of marine life at the aquarium and beyond. Regular admission is $29.95 for adults, $27.95 for seniors (over 65) and students. For more information about the event (in English and Spanish) visit www.montereybayaquarium.org, or call 831-648-4888 or 800-555-3656 (en español). The mission of the Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the oceans.
